Tom Hughes
Known as Heart Attack Hughes
One of Lesbie Avenue’s four founders, Tom Hughes is also responsible for its name. The Norwich supporter was discussing Delia Smith’s famous “Let’s be having you” speech when he heard “Lesbie Avenue”—and a club identity was born. A midfielder by instinct and the current manager on paper, Tom picks the team, organises substitutions and remains the gaffer even while playing. Calm and constructive, he brings tactics, bibs, cones and footballs to training, believing matches can be won on the whiteboard before kick-off. He has also recruited several key players through O’Neill’s and secured the pub’s partnership with Gôl. His appearance encourages opponents to expect the mobility of an unhealthy older gentleman. Instead, Tom takes them on with surprising finesse before choosing the decisive pass when everyone is begging him to shoot. After suffering a heart attack in 2026, “Heart Attack Hughes” recovered in time to play in the annual 11-a-side derby he created. His team earned a penalty that offered a route back into the match; naturally, he missed it horrifically. A selfless teammate, excellent cocktail-maker and part-time scout, Tom asks for little and gives the team plenty.
