Formed by a group of school friends in 2016, Lesbie Avenue has spent the years since competing in 7-a-side leagues across South Wales—and has now entered its first official 5-a-side league. Different formats, same group of friends.

In 2016, aged 17 and 18, a group of school friends entered a 7-a-side league at Cwmbran Stadium. What began as a way to keep playing together became a club that followed them into adulthood.
Since then, Lesbie Avenue has played league football in Cwmbran, Newbridge, at St Cyres in Penarth and at Gôl Cardiff. The venues have changed, but the purpose has remained the same: friends playing football together.
Casual 5-a-side had always been part of the group, but the current Cardiff league marks Lesbie Avenue's first official 5-a-side campaign.

Where are you?
The speech that named a club.
During a conversation about Delia Smith's famous Norwich City half-time speech, founding member and Norwich supporter Tom Hughes noticed something nobody in the group could unhear: “Let's be having you” sounded remarkably like “Lesbie Avenue.”
The name stuck. What began as a joke between friends became the name of the team—and eventually the identity of the club.

The birthday match.
Once a year, the wider group grows to more than 22 players for a full 11-a-side birthday match. Known variously as the Hughes Birthday Cup and the Tom Derby, it has no official title—but after three years, it is firmly part of the club calendar.
